Spotlight on: Missoni Home
Missoni was established in 1953 by Rosita and Ottavio Missoni, who began designing from their knitwear shop in Gallarate, Northern Italy. By 1958, the very first Missoni fashion line was presented in Milan and by 1962 the iconic zigzag pattern was formed. A golden era in the 70s, followed by international recognition by some of the fashion industry’s biggest influencers, helped to form one of the most successful luxury lifestyle brands in the world.
Today, three generations of the Missoni family work across the business ensuring the iconic brand stays as relevant and influential as ever before. After handing over reins of the fashion business to her daughter Angela in 1983, Rosita collaborated with her family’s fabric mill in Northern Italy to establish Missoni Home fabrics, one of the many categories which make up Missoni’s impressive and diverse repertoire.
The Copper Geranium and Silver Springtime collections highlight the ever-popular metallic look; the delicate metallic threads running through the fabrics give a subtle shimmer in the light and the dark greys, twilight blues and dusky lilac tones add a contemporary edge.
On or off the catwalk, Missoni fabrics stay bold, bright and patterned. The vibrant Geranium collection works perfectly with the equally flamboyant Springtime collection, and contain everything you could possibly want from the iconic Missoni brand - happy, sunshine tones, floral geranium prints and ombre effect zigzags.
Some of the most recognisable Missoni fashion fabrics have been reimagined for use in the home as see in the Master Moderno collection. The Passiflora design is arguable the most famous Missoni floral, originally printed on silk dresses, skirts and scarves for the fashion line. The design was re-scaled and re-coloured for use in the home, and over the years has been offered in a range new colours and scales. Paired with the zigzag Kew design, as seen below, the result is particularly striking.
It’s a testament to the versatility of Missoni Home designs that even in black and white, with the punchy colours removed, the fabrics are still incredibly appealing. The Black & White collection is ideal for colour shy individuals who still want to inject that quintessential Missoni style into their homes. The Anemones Dream collection creatively interprets the effect of shadow and shade with its own black and white designs along with the occasional injection of muted colour.
From catwalk to couch, Missoni Home continues to prove that fashion is just as important for the home as it is the wardrobe. Each year, Missoni Home reveals refreshing new fabric collections, and more recently wallpaper collections, which remain rooted to its heritage, but still excite and inspire us all, leaving us eager to see what they do next.
