Q&A with Nanimarquina
Nanimarquina is a family-run business, created in Barcelona in 1987 when contemporary rugs were non-existent in Spain. Known for exceptional craftmanship and collaborations with renowned international designers, we couldn’t wait to delve deeper and find out more about the brand.
We spoke with Founder and MD Nani Marquina herself to learn more about nanimarquina, its history and to hear her advice on choosing the perfect rug.
How did the brand nanimarquina come about?
When the era of dictatorship in Spain came to an end, paving the way for democracy, it sparked a transformative wave, particularly in my hometown Barcelona. It was a period marked by revolutionary changes at every level, and I couldn't help but notice a burgeoning market opportunity. As numerous designers ventured into establishing their own companies, focusing primarily on furniture and home products, I identified a unique gap—none was doing rugs, so I saw my opportunity!
My journey began in pattern design and prints for household products so I saw there were similarities with rug design. In 1987, with limited knowledge about rugs themselves, I took the leap and the more I immersed myself, the more it entranced me.
How would you describe nanimarquina to someone new to the brand?
Nanimarquina emerged during a time when contemporary rugs were not yet available. This marked a significant shift in the world of carpets. In its early stages in the 1980s, the brand embraced bold, vibrant colours and distinctive geometric designs.
From that moment on, we introduced the brand to other designers, and this opened more doors and allowed us to become known internationally. We pioneered the creation of designer rugs by seamlessly blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge contemporary design.
What is unique about Nanimarquina?
One of the things that makes us unique is the fact that we do not have a single style. By collaborating with various designers, we embrace eclecticism, allowing for a diverse and dynamic range of creations.
Also, the passion we have for discovering different materials is another very nanimarquina point. We are consistently on the lookout for innovative materials, ranging from natural fibers to felt, hand-spun Afghan wool, synthetic fibers, and even 100% recycled materials.
Finally, colour is ingrained in our DNA. We revel in the transformative power of colour, and it is a crucial element in our design process.
What is the manufacturing process involved with making a rug?
At nanimarquina, each rug undergoes a unique and dynamic creative process. Our approach is flexible, intuitive, and at times, wonderfully chaotic. The journey begins with a variety of sources – archived ideas, direct commissions to designers, research-driven goals, or spontaneous inspiration.
Once an idea takes hold, we strive to capture it in a sketch, which then into a tangible proposal for crafting the prototype. The prototyping phase is crucial, allowing the initial idea to evolve in terms of shape, colour, technique, and material. It's a highly adaptive and evolutionary process where the rug gradually takes on its final form.
What has been your proudest achievement since launching nanimarquina?
In 2013, we took a significant step by incorporating Eco-Sheen and Jutex, both biodegradable and chemical-free products, into our cleaning process.
Our latest sustainability milestone is becoming the first Climate Neutral certified rug company, a testament to our dedication to a zero-emissions future. Having developed a measurement program, we have set an annual reduction plan to consistently decrease CO2 emissions every year. In addition, to achieve zero net emissions, we have joined to different projects audited by Gold Standard as an offset plan.
You have spent 35 years collaborating with international designers. How important is this to you as a brand?
Collaborating with so many well-known designers has provided us with a unique perspective of both the world and of design. In our early days, this collaborative approach not only garnered international recognition but also opened doors to working with even more renowned designers, creating a mutually beneficial exchange.
Over the collaborations, we also discovered that you could do almost anything when working with craftmanship and manual weavers. The key lies in a deep understanding of techniques, a passion for overcoming challenges, and a hands-on presence at the looms.
What is your favourite rug design and why?
It’s difficult to say which is my favourite design as I have been making rugs for almost 40 years. If I had to choose one from our current catalogue, I would choose the Tres collection, a rug that is a tribute to craftsmanship because it’s designed in the same way as a dhurrie, employing different wools, knots, colours and weaving techniques.
Another exceptional piece that I love is the Losanges by the Bouroullec brothers. It’s a rug that exemplifies the combination of the artisan tradition given using Afghan wool, very rustic, traditional, hand-spun wool, with the contrast of the more contemporary design, irregular and different from what we understand as a traditional rug.
What advantages does having a rug bring?
Nanimarquina rugs play an important role in shaping the soul of a space, offering a range of benefits that extend beyond mere aesthetics. They contribute to a sense of comfort and well-being, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The interstices of the fibers trap air, providing an effective barrier against temperature variations and contributing to energy savings.
In addition to their thermal properties, our rugs serve as excellent acoustic insulators. They absorb sounds and reduce noise levels, fostering a quieter and more serene environment.
Finally, through a thoughtful selection of colours and textures, our rugs are designed to alleviate the strain caused by prolonged exposure to screens. They help relax the eyes and create a visually soothing environment.
What are your top tips for anyone looking to add a Nanimarquina rug to their home?
Nanimarquina offers a wide variety of rugs and different types: from plain rugs, with lots of colours, with extreme designs, to simpler ones...the most important thing is to fall in love with the rug.
Once you've found that special piece that resonates with you, the next step is envisioning how it seamlessly integrates into your space. Whether complementing your furniture, becoming a focal point in your favourite area, or harmonizing with its surroundings, a rug is more than just a piece; it's a significant element that makes a lasting impact.
What’s next for Nanimarquina?
First and foremost, we remain committed to advancing our sustainable journey, ensuring that environmental consciousness remains at the heart of everything we do.
Looking ahead to the coming year, we are excited to introduce new collections crafted in collaboration with a mix of fresh talents, renowned designers, and accomplished artists. As well as we are developing internal collection to expand our design portfolio.
