Inside @at_lucys_house's charming English cottage bedroom
Nothing says cottage more than low ceilings, classic floral prints and exposed beams, so we were thrilled to work with @at_lucys_house on her master bedroom project.
Lucy wanted the scheme to have a fresh, updated look whilst making sure it stayed in keeping with the rest of her charming 500-year-old cottage nestled deep in the Cotswolds. Full of colour and pattern, she has mastered creating the perfect layered look in keeping with a classic characterful cottage.
Keen to use a floral design, Lucy first chose Midsummer Eve by Borastapeter for her walls, a pretty pastel floral repeat pattern on a neutral white base. She used the wallpaper on all walls - combined with panelling and even between shelving for an all-over look, great for creating that sought after cosiness that cottage chic is all about.
Lucy then based the rest of her scheme around this wallpaper, layering other patterns and colours with it. For her made to measure curtains, she chose popular small-scale print Dulcie by Ian Sanderson in a gorgeous soft blue colourway.
Speaking fondly of her curtains, Lucy said “This beautiful fabric effortlessly ties the colours of the room together perfectly. I went for the thermal blackout lining as our cottage can get very chilly in the winter, and I chose the gathered heading as I wanted them to feel less formal and a little more frilly and romantic”.
For her woodwork she used a warm blue-grey paint around the entire room such as her panelled walls, wardrobes and shelving. When using a combination of patterns it's important to use something like paint in a complementary shade to create harmony by tying everything together, and this blue tone does exactly that.
Upcycling is a key technique in creating that lived-in feel synonymous with cottage properties, so rather than buy new, Lucy cleverly used some of the leftover Dulcie fabric to give new life to some old bedside tables.
Painting them in the same duck egg blue as her cabinetry, replacing the handles and stapling the fabric to the doors of her tables with a staple gun, they have been transformed and now work beautifully with the rest of the room.
Overall, it is clear that the key is to stay authentic to both your own style and the style of your property when decorating, just as Lucy has. Her thoughtful choice of patterns and colours, combined with her eclectic assortment of vintage upcycled furniture and accessories, harmoniously enhances the charm of her country cottage.
