In focus: Our picks from GP & J Baker – the Coromandel collection
Consisting of two smaller collections, created to enhance and complement one another, the Coromandel fabric collection by GP & J Baker is a celebration of Indian design and techniques. A playground of tones, textures and patterns, it demonstrates the heritage, innovation and versatility that makes GP & J Baker such an extraordinary brand. The source of many of the designs in this collection is GP & J Baker’s extensive archive, which includes Indienne designs dating back to 1750, of which a selection are on display in London’s V & A Museum.
The central collection, Coromandel, features large-scale prints in a colour palette inspired by the original archive documents, but with the addition of new spice tones. Arguably the most iconic print from this range is Coromandel, which is centred around amazing Kashmir paisleys, incorporating florals and entwined leaves to stunning effect. Also included is Lapura Damask, an all-over print of exotic fruits designed to be infinitely usable in upholstery and curtains, as well as two elegant botanicals: Jewel Indienne with its classic tree of life motif, and Cashimira, an exciting block print.
According to Creative Director Ann Grafton, “An Indienne collection would not be complete without the inclusion of a beautiful scenic print,” and the Ramayana design is an extraordinary example of this. Inspired by a Persian country park scene and available as both a velvet and a linen, it features horses, birds and other flora and fauna in its intricately detailed design.
Created to perfectly complement the larger designs, the Coromandel Small Print collection is wonderfully versatile, with mid to small-scale motifs that work a beautifully on their own as they do in support of a larger print. Alma is a gentle, mid-scale stripe with plenty of space to balance the intricate detail, while Seed Pod and Pomegranate are sketchier and more abstract in style. Poppy Paisley is available in a fabulous colour palette, and combines the intricacy and visual impact of some of the larger paisleys with the versatility of the other designs in the Small Print collection.
Both as a tribute to the original Baker brothers’ love of Indienne fabrics, and as a covetable collection for use in a modern home, Coromandel makes an impact. The attention to detail applied by the design team, coupled with the versatility of each of the fabrics means that this collection is not only inspirational, but incredibly useable throughout the home.
