In focus: Our picks from Clarke & Clarke - the Animalia collection

There is little we love more than when one of the brands we work with teams up with a fantastic independent artist to launch a new collection, and Animalia by Clarke & Clarke and Emma J Shipley is no exception. Filled with exotic brights and unusual flora and fauna, this collection of fabrics and wallpapers is a perfect fusion of fine art and design. The perfect choice for any maximalist, designs from this collection can be mixed and matched to create a truly breath-taking scheme, or contrasted with plains for maximum impact.

A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Emma J Shipley’s work in fantasy design is unparalleled, and there is something utterly entrancing about her illustrations. Her signature style is to combine realistic, detailed nature sketches with imaginative elements, and each and every design begins its life as a pencil drawing in her sketchbook.

True to Emma J Shipley’s background, exquisite, hand-drawn illustrations of abstract tropical animals are the central theme of the Animalia collection, with almost every design featuring jungle creatures, from swinging lemurs and ferocious tigers to exotic birds and delicate butterflies. Tigris, a striking design featuring prowling tigers on a sketched leopard print ground, is available in a colour palette that ranges from deep gold and copper to vibrant teal, and works beautifully either on a feature wall or as an accent cushion.

Another favourite design of ours is Kruger, an explosion of jungle life featuring giraffe, mythical horned zebras, birds and insects – dial up the fantasy by choosing the flame, lime or magenta colourways, or allow the incredible design to speak for itself with a more subtle, neutral background. Intense as these designs are, they can work beautifully on all four walls, especially in a dressing room or downstairs bathroom, where they will add real wow factor.

At the subtler end of the scale – or as subtle as this collection gets – is the smaller-scale Jungle Palms design. Individual motifs are given a little breathing space, giving a slightly more pared-back feel.

Perfect for a striking pair of floor-length curtains or a spectacular bedspread, the Amazon design is an all over print with detail that could hold your gaze for days. Parrots with peacock tails swoop, grasping a tiger’s tail in their claws, while jungle vines loops around the entire design.

There’s so much to explore with this enchanting collection of wallcoverings and fabrics, and the possibilities for their use are almost endless.
